Salmon Camp Gets Two Rave Reviews

Article Date: November 1998

This past August 9 to 15, I had an extraordinary Atlantic salmon angling experience at Camp Bonaventure (*) in Quebec. Although both air and water temperatures achieved new record highs during my stay and my catch rate was low, I had so much fun and learned so much that I would like to share the experience in detail with other Angling Report subscribers.

Camp Bonaventure is located on the Bonaventure River, which empties into the Bay of Chaleur on the southern coast of the Gaspe Peninsula. The camp just completed its third season. The camp is located beside several pools on the lower section of the river, but fishing manager Glenn LeGrand spends much of his time reserving water on other sectors. He also has access to beats on the Grand Cascapedia and the Petite Cascapedia, where he can use the Quebecois wildlife management area (ZEC) system to reserve sectors where the salmon are holding. Thus, Camp Bonaventure is not confined to its "home water," and its guests do not have to continually second-guess the annual run to be put over good fish. This flexibility is a major positive factor that separates Camp Bonaventure from other lodges confined to their own private water. In fact, LeGrand's guides drove us to pools near and far, putting us over fresh fish on each of our five days.

According to the camp's log book, the Bonaventure River appears to have good runs of salmon from mid-June through September. Granted, like all salmon fishing, the timing of the runs changes from year to year and nothing is for sure. Although LeGrand reports the overall rate of return of salmon to Quebec rivers was down this year, I saw enough pools holding 25 to 40 salmon to keep me challenged. Throughout the river, even to the bottom of the deepest pools, I........(continued)
