Where To Go Fishing Near Salt Lake

Article Date: May 2002

Salt Lake City, Utah, is a bit like Atlanta, Georgia, in that you have to go through it to get to lots of other nearby places. But, hey - there are worse things than passing through, or stopping over, in Salt Lake: things like fishing the Logan and Provo Rivers; or stealing off to drop a line in one of hundreds of high country lakes in the Uinta Mountains; or fishing by your lonesome in tight smaller streams such as the Blacksmith Fork or Currant Creek. Head north, east or south of Salt Lake and you'll find trout water.

For some reason, you don't hear much about Utah's fisheries unless it's yet another article about the renowned tailwater, the Green River. That's not to suggest that the Green is anything but glorious. Fish it if you can. But once you have, don't think you have even scratched the surface of what's available, as witness this quick overview of the Logan and Provo rivers and the Blacksmith Fork and Currant Creek:

The Provo River is a productive year-round tailwater canyon stream that originates in the Uinta Mountains southeast of Salt Lake City, meanders through the Heber Valley, collects in Jordanelle and Deer Creek reservoirs and ends up in Utah Lake south of the City. In all, it provides more than 60 miles of fishing opportunity. Once known as the West's premier brown trout river, the Provo is not today what it once was, having suffered terribly in recent years from channelization, heavy angling pressure and water diversion. On the bright side, reclamation work and new regulations are having an effect.

Ryan Barnes of Western Rivers Flyfisher is among the locals who is bullish on the Provo, calling it "productive" and "on its way to greatness again." Although rare, there are browns now in the Provo that measure 28, even 30, inches. If you look down at the big pools, you can often see big trout in the 22- to 24-inch range holding, feeding. The river also holds rainbows and native cutthroat trout.........(continued)
