Update On Fishing The Potomac River

On the subject of updates, what is the latest on fishing the Potomac River that winds its way through Washington, D.C., offering some wonderful, quick-escape fishing for executives and others with business in the nation's capitol? Seems many of the guides we told you about in previous reports have either closed shop or sold out. One who hasn't is Ken Penrod of Life Outdoors Unlimited. Penrod employs a number of guides who can take clients out for smallmouths in Washington, D.C., and the upper Potomac; or for smallmouth and largemouth bass, plus stripers, on the tidal Potomac. His guides use jet boats on the upper portion of the river and bass boats in the tidal section, and they can handle fly fishermen. Anglers must provide their own fly tackle, lunch and drinks. A full-day trip in Washington, D.C. is $300; half days are $200, not including fishing license. Penrod literally wrote the book on fishing the Potomac, two books in fact. Fishing The Upper Potomac River and Ken Penrod's Tidal Potomac River Fishing Bible are both offered on Penrod's web site for $25 each.
Another guide who can take you fishing in Washington, D.C., is Ed Keller of Potomac Guide Service. This company, you may recall, was owned by Bill Kramer when we previously told you about it. Like Kramer, the new owner guides the upper and tidal sections of the Potomac. He will meet you at the boat ramp in D.C. and take you to fishing spots where you can catch small- mouths in the shadow of the Washington Monument. Keller uses an aluminum jet boat for the upper section of the river and a fiberglass bass boat for the tidal areas. He fishes throughout the summer and into early fall until the weather cools.
