Blackhawk Flyfishing: An On-Site Report

I promised Angling Report Publisher Don Causey a report on my fishing experience at Blackhawk Flyfishing, but I'm having some difficulty preparing it, and I'm going to get absolutely no sympathy from any of you. My arms are sore, my back aches and with every few words I write I find myself drifting back to yesterday -- replaying the tiring struggles with incredibly strong, monstrously large trout that produced my present state of physical exhaustion. The last time I felt this bad from fighting fish it was the day after a very successful tarpon trip.
In exchange for this report, The Angling Report arranged a day of guided fishing for me, plus one night's lodging at Blackhawk Flyfishing on the Soque River just upstream from Clarksville in the foothills of north Georgia. I was hosted by Abby and John Jackson, the proprietors, and fished with George Beasley, a local guide, who spends much of the year guiding on Calgary's Bow River. There are about a half dozen pay sections on this river now, all within a short distance of one another, and all offering the chance to catch trophy-sized trout in a beautiful mountain stream.
What distinguishes Blackhawk Flyfishing is the way the river keeper, Dave Sutton, has managed this 1.5-mile section of stream. He has found the right balance for feeding the trout enough to keep them from migrating and allowing them rapid growth without making them uninterested in natural foods. The fish, though quite large, are not sluggish, as one might expect, and are as bright and strong as any I've caught anywhere. My largest fish measured 29 inches long and 16¾ inches in girth. Amazingly, it jumped out of the water four times and ran into my backing before I was able to slow him down at all.
A single fish like that would make the trip a success, but I had many more that were in the eight- to 10-pound range and only a few fish under 18 inches long. After five years of drought, the fish seem........(continued)
