This Acklin Island Bonefish Trip Is Dirt Cheap
Article Date: July 2006
Remember our two-part report in the April issue about Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters, a company in upstate New York that helps anglers enjoy dirt-cheap, self-outfitted fishing trips in The Bahamas? Our introductory report was followed by a generally positive first-person report on a self-outfitted trip to Acklins Island filed by German subscriber Fritz Grasberger. He paid only $1,200 per person for a week of unguided fishing, and that included all meals, lodging and the use of a canoe and kayak. Here at The Angling Report, we were so intrigued by this trip option we decided to give it a second look. Here is his assessment of the trip.
There is a certain rhythm one gets into when all he does is fish with guides. A passivity sets in. A sense of entitlement. "I'm here, fellows. Show me the fish. Tell me what to do." Just don't take that game tally and assume I didn't enjoy the experience, because I did. And I also have an excuse lined up - namely, a cold front that unleashed ferocious winds and sent wave after wave of clouds scudding by. The cold front also made the bonefish I was able to see and cast to very skittish. I'll have more to say on that in a moment.
First, though, a few words about the overall experience of fishing on your own in the Bahamas, armed with nothing more than the packet of information I received from Cattaraugus........(continued)
