Angling News From Chile, British Columbia, Bolivia, Mexico and India

Article Date: November 2007

Now, here are two interesting opportunities in Chile. One is for the expanded options provided by fly-in fishing, and the other for fishing sea-run browns in Tierra del Fuego. Openings for this kind of fishing on the Argentine side are few and far between.

First, the fly-in fishing. It takes place in southern Chile out of a place called Heart of the Andes Lodge, located about six hours south of Coihaque on the border of a national park. The operation is owned and operated by Mark Kniprath, who was a bush pilot in Alaska for many years and supposedly the first to bring this kind of fishing experience to the Andes. The lodge sits on the edge of Lago General Carerra, where Kniprath accesses about 30 remote streams and lakes to take anglers fishing for brown and rainbow trout, brookies, occasional sea-run browns and Pacific salmon. At certain times of year, large runs of king and silver salmon come into a number of rivers in this region. Because Kniprath can easily fly clients into different waters every day, the variety of fishing he provides vastly exceeds anything other operations in the region can offer.

Clients fly into Balmaceda, Chile, where Kniprath picks them up for the 35-minute flight to his private landing strip adjacent the lodge. The lodge itself is a fairly new structure that Kniprath custom-built. Guests sleep in two-bedroom cabins featuring queen beds, a shared bath, a living room with fireplace and a refrigerator stocked with cold beer. The main lodge has a full bar, pool table and fly tying bench. The cost of a seven-day package is $4,500. Fly-out trips are an additional $100 to $200 per person, depending on the number of anglers. Kniprath can provide all fly tackle and flies.

Unfortunately, these trips won't be offere........(continued)
