The Rivermouth Imbroglio, Continued
Article Date: July 1991
What's the latest on the rivermouth imbroglio in Eastern Costa Rica, about which we have written so much recently? For one thing, The Angling Report has been copied on a letter from subscriber Joseph F. Feffara, in which he takes us very much to task for lumping the Rio Colorado in with the Parismina River, the latter of which he says has "been bad for many years." The Colorado and, more specifically, Casa Mar Lodge, have been producing a lot of tarpon this year - yes, in the river - and we should "at least partially retract" what we've said about the rivermouth problem affecting all East Coast Lodges. We'll do better than that - we're making Ferrara's entire letter a part of our Costa Rica file. We agree the rivermouth situation is very complex and lots of investor money is involved. The more information the interested angler has, the better. Our thanks to Feffara for copying us with the letter....On another front in this war of opinion, Jim Chapralis, who runs Pan Angler booking agency and publishes a newsletter to promote his destinations, has weighed in with a modest proposal to solve the rivermouth problem by introducing largemouth bass into the river systems. That way, one could fish for raker-shakers one day and bucketmouths the next...or vice versa, depending on when or whether one could get out into the ocean. Only problem I see is the difference in (How shall I phrase it?) class between the people who go after tarpon and those who like to bust hawgs. Methinks the whole fishery would find a new lower common denominator with people using bait on their hooks and spitting in Dixie cups. Oh, well....My own suggestion for a fresh look at the whole problem is to study what's going on in........(continued)
