Follow-up Fishing Report On Down River Charters In Massachusetts

In the February 2009 issue, you may recall, subscriber David Frances had good things to say about Capt. Kalil Boghdan of Down River Charters in Essex, Massachusetts. Well, Honor Roll subscriber Bill Taylor has now heartily seconded Frances' opinion of Boghda after fishing with him this past June as an add-on to a trip to Boston.

Conditions were typical that day for spring 2009, Taylor says: unseasonably cool, overcast, threatening showers, a moderate northerly breeze. Not surprisingly, the stripers did their best to make themselves scarce. Still, Taylor says he enjoyed a surface "blitz" for about 45 minutes at high tide and managed to land four fish between 20 and 25 inches before the fish disappeared again.

Taylor says Boghdan distinguished himself in two ways: "Capt. Kalil sent me an e-mail with pictures of my fish the same day of the charter, and he also mailed me a CD of photos the same week. Also, at the end of what turned out to be a slow day, he suggested I only pay $150 for the trip. I chose to pay him the $375 due for a full day."

Not surprisingly, Taylor recommends the experience: "Historic Essex is convenient to Boston and fun to explore. Beachcombing at Crane's is an option for non-anglers. The river is frequently filled with stripers and is always scenic. On top of that, Capt. Ka........(continued)
