Economical Fishing Near Cancun

Article Date: November 1990

There is no question that Cancun, Mexico, on the eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, is one of the great bargain destinations right now for anglers who travel. As this issue went to press, round-trip airfare from Miami was as low as $185. Additionally, many hotels were offering very low daily rates.

As attractive as all that sounds, I have a suggestion that will save you even more money and put some outstanding (and little known) fishing right at your doorstep. Quite simply, don't stay in Cancun. Instead, fly into Cancun International Airport and hire the van there that goes to the town of Puerto Juarez, where the ferries to nearby Isla Mujeres dock. The van ride costs about $20, and the eight plus mile ferry ride about $2. There are two ferries, incidentally, one for people and one for autos and people. The smaller "people ferry" is more fun.

There are lots of hotels on Isla Mujeres that cost a fraction of what Cancun Hotels cost. One I like is the Belmar Hotel (*). It has air conditioning, Showtime TV, hot shower, immaculate tiled floors and an excellent hand laundry; and it is only a couple of blocks from the ferry dock. Rates run from $29 for two people up to $49 for deluxe rooms.

Now, here's the good part. Once you get settled, simply call the Tourist Cooperative of Transportation of Isla Mujeres (*). These people can arrange to have a boat (a fast, 25 foot panga) and guide waiting for you in the morning. Up to three of you can go in the boat for a daily rate of about $225.

So, where should you go? Tell your guide to take you to Isla Blanca, which is really part of the Yucatan Peninsula, as it is separated from the mainland only by a narrow cut. It is, in fact, the very northeasternmost tip of the Peninsula, and countless anglers every year go right past it on the way offshore in search........(continued)
