More On Fishing The Tongait River

In another part of the world, remember the brief item in last month's issue about the char fishing on Baffin Island's Tongait River? I concluded the report with a request for more information on how to catch these fish on a fly rod. I'm happy to report that subscriber Kevin D. Becker has rushed to the rescue. Herewith an edited version of his useful note: "I have fished the Tongait and I initially had the same experience as your correspondent Bob Gooch did. However, I was finally successful. The trick was to use a floating line and an orange and silver bucktail, fished when the tide was coming in. The main trick, however, was to strip the line as fast as possible. Invariably, two or three char would follow the fly and, out of competition, one would take the fly. Fishing this way, I was able to keep up with the spin fishermen. Incidentally, these char put every other fish to shame with their strength. You cannot believe how they fight! They even put steelhead in another league bush league. Fortunately, they are plentiful, too. Let's just hope we don't have to wipe them out before they begin to get the respect they........(continued)
