DESCRIPTION OF FISHING
Species Sought/Availability: Salmon, Coho - Availability: Average
Trout, Rainbow - Availability: Abundant
Char, Arctic - Availability: Abundant
Trout, Dolly Varden - Availability: Abundant
Description of Catch Made: Also caught Arctic Grayling. The Silver Salmon fishing for us specifically was only fair the one day we targeted them, but other guests reported excellent fishing for them on other days. Fishing for trout and char was excellent throughout with Rainbows up to 6 lbs on the Kvichak and up to 4 lbs elsewhere and Char up to 7 lbs.
Type of Fishing: Daily fly-outs to base camps with jet sleds. Most of the the fishing was from the bank, with the jet sleds transporting you from spot to spot, although occasionally we fished from an anchored or drifting boat.
Equipment Used: Trout, Char & Grayling: 5-6 weights, except on Kvichak where we used 7-8 weights. Floating lines with beads & indicator. Silver Salmon: 8 weights and some spin fishing, using floating lines using "chuck & duck" technique
Flies Used: Beads for all resident species. Heavily weighted flashy purple/red flies for Silvers
Description of Hatches: Hatches are unusual this time of year, although Grayling rose to unidentified insects one day, but neither the guide nor I brought any dry flies that day.
Water/Weather Conditions: Typical late summer/early fall Alaska weather - very variable (from sunny to rainy and back again in a single day). Highs were in the upper 50s. Bugs not amajor problem in the late season.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems on the Trip: NONE
Highlights of the Trip: Seeing my girlfriend, who has never fished before, catch numerous fish (and enjoying it too)!
Cost of the Trip: $6,600
Would You Recommend This Trip to a Friend? Yes
Why? I've fished a lot of different places (Alaska, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Christmas Island, Baja, Florida Keys). This is one of the best-run lodge operations I've experienced, resulting in one of the best fishing vacations I've ever had. Excellent food, service, guides, etc. In particular, they were very patient with and solicitous of my girlfriend, who, as noted above, was a rank beginner (not just to fly fishing, but to fishing in general). Mission also attracts a very nice clientele, which added to the overall positive experience. Not cheap, but worth the money.
Are There Non-Fishing Activities? Yes
If So, What Are They? Flightseeing for wildlife. We spent one day at Brook Falls to see (numerous) bears, some up and close!
