ADDITIONAL COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
My wife and I take an annual one week trip in Janaury to break up the winter in South Lake Tahoe. In previous trips to Puerto Vallarta I was unable to locate a fly fishing outfitter or guide. From a note in Angling Report Newsletter this past year I got in contact with Phil Kerr, an outfitter who does not fly fish but said he had a guide who did. Arrangements were made with Phil to fish with his guide on January 16. I met the guide, Chuy Cruz at a marina at 7:30 am, bought a lic at the dock ($13) and went aboard a 23 foot boat with two 90 hp Honda outboards. One crewman/deckhand accompanied us. Note: I had been advised that no equipment was available and I was to bring my own rods, reels, lines, flies, etc. I had been advised the type lines, flies, wt. rigs etc. would be best. I took and used a 10 wt. salt water rod with a large arbor reel rigged with a wt. forward 500 gr. Sink tip line with several hundred yards backing. As it turned out this extensive backing was the smartest move of the trip.

We went some 10-15 miles south along the coast and began to cast toward the surf with a smallish Clouser type fly. Caught one small darter type fish. At about 10 am a large roosterfish took the fly and the fight was on. It became obvious to me that I was probably overmatched relative to gear but with some very able boat handling and probably some luck I got the fish to the boat and in with again some able assistance from the guide and deckhand an hour and twenty minutes later. I was exhausted and needed a break. Ate an early lunch provided by the guide and rested for a while. By the time I was ready to begin fishing again the wind had increased to the point it was impossible to cast and the swells had increased to over six feet. We moved away from the beach area and began to just troll as we headed back north. Saw a sailfish three times but could never get into a position to get a fly close to him before he disappeared. Arrived back at the marina about 3 pm. Note: We had agreed before the trip to release fish caught but the guide said that this fish was exhausted to near death and would not possibly survive if released. This was probably the result of catching it with undersized equipement.

Comments: The guide had 15 years experience salt water guiding in Alaska in the summers. His English was very good. He did have some equipment aboard but it was quite old. He also had some flies. The boat was not really prepared for fly fishing but was acceptable. The boat was not pristine but I never had any concerns regarding safety even in the heavy seas. I was most favorably impressed with his boat handling skills. And his skills with the boat certainly helped in landing the fish.

The cost for the day fishing was $400 plus tips and license. If I return to Puerto Vallarta I will certainly fish with this guide again.
