Rebuttal from Kevin Stubbs of Expedition Outfitters:
Mr. Goldston makes several valid points. First, this is indeed a fairly expensive trip. But there are several reasons for this: 1.) The Devils River is almost 40 miles long with one mile of public access. We pay several hundred dollars to be able to use a beautiful ranch that offers over three miles of river frontage. This gives us a staging area to float and fish 11 miles of pristine water that most people will never see. 2.) The shuttle and take-out access cost us almost $300. 3.) Roundtrip fuel costs are $600 for the expedition vehicles. 4.) State Park permits for the angler's party were included in the package, as were all meals, plus beer, wine and lodging for two days and three nights. 5.) This trip requires the expedition team to spend a total of six days to pack, prepare, procure and transport the necessary rafts, gear and supplies to sustain seven people (four fishermen, two guides and a caterer).
As for the fish being few and far between and spooky to boot, again Mr. Goldston is right in some respects. The bass in Devils River don't get to be big by being dumb. The river is crystal-clear with 40 feet of visibility in the deeper holes. This calls for a stealthy and accurate presentation that even well-traveled anglers find difficult to execute. I do apologize that Mr. Goldston caught the fewest fish in the party. I wish this were not the case. Thanks for the opportunity to respond. - Kevin Stubbs, Expedition Outfitters.
