Munupi Wilderness Lodge
Northern Territory, Australia
By Jim and Suze Mundy
Golden Snapper with David Taat: We have never caught, or eaten, more saltwater fish - both in terms of numbers and species. Here is one of many golden snappers that David put us on..
Fishing in the rain: Suze may look cold, but really only trying to stay somewhat dry for at least a small part of the day. She finally soaked through. Never once did we stop fishing… even when it was pouring. It was a test to our endurance. Sometimes it rained so hard we couldn't even see where our lure hit!
Barramundi: These barramundi were the prize, but we only boated seven due to the rain. David put us on the barra right off with me missing my first one (the big one, of course) but followed with another great spot.

Queenfish: The barramundi is the fish these waters are famous for, but my favorite was the powerful Queenfish. I have read that the bonefish is the fastest fish in the ocean; I'll race anyone's bonefish with this queenie! WOW---I thought I'd hooked a torpedo.
For brute strength, this grouper felt like he weighed 100 pounds! David spent 30 minutes trying to uproot a couple of mangrove trees to untangle this prehistoric beast.
Crocodile: This saltwater croc just appeared. They float up to the top of the water and quietly cast their evil eye on their next meal… makes you think twice about sticking your hand in the water!
Aerial View: We took this picture as we flew back to Darwin. The small creeks were where we did most of our fishing. The river is actually a strait separating the islands.
Lodge Dinner Spread: I could write pages about the fantastic meals we were served. Always plenty of fresh sushi, and we loved the pumpkin soup. Who could refuse fresh caught sashimi!
(Editor Note: Subscribers Jim and Suze Mundy reported on a trip to Australia's Tiwi Islands in the May 2007 issue of The Angling Report. They fished with Munupi Wilderness Lodge during the rainy season and were unable to fly fish due to churned up waters. Despite the conditions, they enjoyed productive fishing and sent in the following photographs of the exotic species they caught. Incidentally, the Mundys say the fly fishing here during the dry season should be even better. For more information, see the Mundys' report in our database or on page 15 of the May issue.)
We spent a WET three days fishing the Aboriginal Tiwi Islands, which are a 30-minute flight north of Darwin. We were hosted by Munupi Lodge, where Michael and Carey Benton, together with fishing guide David Taat, took fantastic care of our every need and showed us the best possible time that can be had in a tropical monsoon. Never have we eaten better. They treated these Americans like royalty. You name it, we got it…. Except sunshine.
When we booked, Michael so politely tried to scare us off because of the frightful weather, but the stubborn Americans needed another adventure and so, David and Michael graciously gave it to us! We were the only tourists on the island due to the fact that this is the worst time of year for fishing. During the evening thunder storms, the lightning was more electrifying than any fireworks, and the thunder vibrated the building. It rained more in one hour than it did in our hometown of Chama, New Mexico, in the last 5 years!!! The rain cools off the water and causes the fish to stop biting. We have to return during the dry season, but we thought the fishing was great.

Guyana Tarpon Fishing
This makeshift church/fishing camp was literally carved out of the jungle. There is no electricity and anglers sleep on the open deck in tents. The fishing area is a short boat ride away.
The Guyana outback is a remote jungle wilderness.
A fishing adventure wouldn't be complete without some dangerous wildlife. Here a 14-foot black caiman swims away from Roberts' boat. Anglers can expect to see hundreds of these predators during a multi-day trip.

While caiman do not have the reputation of the Nile crocodile for aggressiveness, they are to be taken seriously. This Amerindian native lost an arm to a large black caiman several years ago.
Part of the charm of these remote adventures is stopping in Amerindian villages to resupply or simply visit with the native people.
Fishing in Guyana is strictly for the adventurous angler who enjoys the challenges of exploring remote wilderness areas with a rod in hand. Hinterlander Tours operator Mike Roberts sent us these photographs from some recent exploratory trips for tarpon in the Northwest District of Guyana. The fishing camp shown below is actually a church built by American missionaries. Roberts rents the structure to base his tarpon fishing forays. These trips involve boating into a huge mangrove jungle and casting flies to tarpon that have never seen a lure before. The area is mostly uninhabited, except for native Amerindians and black caiman. You can read all about these trips in the May 2007 issue of The Angling Report.

Additional Information: For 25 years my son Kevin and I have chased large trout. Where e'er they swam, we sought 'em. With rod tubes in hand we logged tens of thousands of miles in this quest, visiting far-flung yet extraordinary parts of the fishing world. I was stupefied when I recently learned that the closest freshwater trout to South Florida were in Georgia, and some of the biggest trout I've seen anywhere were prepared to accept our flies only four hours from our West Palm Beach home.
The Soque River in North Georgia is a bit of a secret. We don't want to spread the word too far on this beautiful little piece of river. However, the folks at Blackhawk Flyfishing in Clarkesville, Georgia, are very nice. So, if you want to see a lovely part of the Georgia hills, meet some nice people, and see some of the largest trout you've ever seen and you are prepared for your arms to hurt, contact Abbey at Blackhawk Flyfishing (info@blackhawkflyfishing.com). - Steven M. Shapiro.

These mahseer were caught on fly rods by a group of Italian anglers who fished the Yammuna River in the Indian Himalayas this past April. They fished with Misty Dhillon of Himalayan Outback (www.himalayanoutback.com), who specializes in organizing camp trips for trophy mahseer in the mountains of remote northern India. Despite bad weather, these anglers caught mahseer weighing from 10 to 20 pounds, and Dhillon himself landed a 35-pounder on spin tackle.
