Getting a slot to fish for those big sea-run brown trout in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, can be difficult due to the high rate of repeat bookings and the limited number of operators there. A new operation in that part of the world, however, may help expand the opportunities for interested anglers. The new kid on the block there is Marcelo Perez of Untamed Angling. While Perez may be new to the Tierra del Fuego scene, he is certainly not new to international anglers. Perez is the outfitter who operates the fishing program at La Zona, that special golden dorado fishery farther north on the Argentine side of the Uruguay River.
Perez recently contacted us to tell us about his new venture called Far End Rivers Lodge. Starting this coming December, he will be operating a program for sea-run browns, rainbows and sea bass on the Irigoyen and Malengüena rivers. Perez says these rivers are about 180 kilometers south of the town of Rio Grande and hold a healthy population of sea-run browns. The area is a transition zone where the dense forests of the Andes Mountains meet the austral Atlantic Ocean. The Irigoyen and Malengüena, along with their tributaries, form a large basin here. For some kilometers from its mouth, the Irigoyen features a series of deep clear pools interspersed between gentle runs. The mouth of the river offers fishing for sea bass. The Malengüena is a tributary of the Irigoyen and flows more slowly, is deep and small, with amber-colored waters. This stream meanders through the countryside about 15 kilometers with innumerable bends and curves marked by partially submerged tree trunks. In all, Far Rivers End has access to 25 miles of private waters.

All fishing is slated to be done by wading, using an ARGO to travel from pool to pool. Anglers are to be housed at a lodge on the Maria Luisa Estancia, which is a 3½-hour drive from either of the airports servicing this region. The lodge will sleep up to six anglers in three double rooms with private baths. The cost for a seven-night package with six fishing days is $4,500. That covers pick-up at the airport, all land transfers, one guide per two anglers, lodging, meals and beverages (including wine, beer and local spirits). The lodge also offers internet access and satellite phone. The season will run from December through April.

Online Extra subscribers take note! Perez has agreed to host an Angling Report Online Extra subscriber on a FREE Fishing Trip here during his first season. We’ll be sending out the invitation soon. In the meantime, visit the Far End Rivers web site at www.farendrivers.com. Be sure you click on the photo slide show of the fishing and the scenery.
