Subscriber Gene M. Tucker recommends as "excellent" the lodging, guiding and fishing he enjoyed on the South Island of New Zealand this past October with Stonefly Lodge (www.stoneflylodge.co.nz), personal guide Paul van de Loo. "This is probably my best fishing trip ever, wading six different rivers in five days, sight fishing to large brown trout. The web site said to expect to sight 10 to 12 fish per day, hook around six to seven and land three to four. That’s about what we did, even with two days of bad weather. New Zealand trout fishing is about size, not numbers. Almost all fish were over six pounds. One was 9¼ pounds, one 8, and another 7 3/4 pounds. We did not see another person on the water in five days."

Tucker booked his trip with Best of New Zealand (800-528-6129; www.bestofnzflyfishing.com)
