Subscriber Dudley Cunningham gives a thumbs-up to his recent stay at Water Cay Lodge on Grand Bahama Island, booked for him by Angling Destinations (www.angling destinations.com). “Great fishing, top guides who put in a full 8-am-to-6-pm day, an 11-pound trophy, good showers, and lovely weather,” he writes. “That combination is hard to beat.”

Cunningham says the bonefish he caught averaged four to five pounds, but he also caught fish upward of eight pounds, plus one that tipped the scale at 11 pounds. Indeed, Water Cay Lodge, located on the north coast of Grand Bahama, is known for big fish. That area is also known for its wind, but guides there have evolved strategies to cope with it.

Cunningham says he spent about 85 percent of his time fishing from the lodge’s Beavertail skiffs, the rest of the time wading. “These skiffs are superb,” he writes. “They ride better than any skinny-water skiff I have used.” He recommends the Water Cay Lodge experience to fellow subscribers and gives the cost of his trip as $2,900.
