Subscriber Deed Whitney gives a thumbs-up to the tarpon fishing he enjoyed with Bahia Honda Sporting Club last June around Cudjoe Key in the lower Florida Keys. He booked the trip through Frontiers Travel International. Whitney says weather was a problem the week he was at the lodge, particularly the wind, which was blowing at a “sustained 25” most of the week. It was also overcast a couple of days. Nonetheless, he reports catching fish in the 80- to 100-pound class.
“The weather was not what we would have expected for the first week of June,” he writes. “But what are you going to do about that? Less-than-ideal weather conditions are generally the rule rather than the exception in saltwater fishing.”
Whitney, as others have done, raves about the accommodations and food at Bahia Honda. “The lodge was fabulous,” he writes. “Awesome accommodations and amenities. The food was by far the best that I have ever had at a fishing lodge, including some of the higher-end lodges I visited in New Zealand. The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. They are just flat-out good people. And that goes for the guides, too, who are extremely knowledgeable and personable. They want you to catch fish at least as badly as you want to catch them. The fish are definitely there in numbers. You just need to bring your A-game to succeed.”
Postscript: Whitney gives the cost of his stay as $5,800. He recommends the experience to fellow subscribers.
