Here’s a change of pace! Try bass fishing in Kentucky at Deer Creek Lodge as a cure for stress and jetlag. Subscriber Dan Adams says he went to Chile this past February and came back exhausted due to the long flight and from coping with political unrest and roadblocks. To recuperate, he drove to Deer Creek Lodge (www.deercreeklodge.net) this past June, an Orvis-endorsed facility in Kentucky, where he caught a huge number of largemouth bass on the fly in a private 40-acre lake.
“I caught 32 bass topwater along a single 100-yard stretch of rocky dam bank, most of them in the four- to five-pound range,” he writes. “I had a great experience. The place was easy to get to, and these people worked hard to please us. On top of that, the food was good.”
Adams says he fished with a guide out of a bass boat equipped with an outboard and an electric motor. He used a 6-wt. rod with a weight-forward floating line and a 7 wt. with a sinktip line. The flies that worked were weedless No. 2 Sneaky Petes in black and chartreuse, weedless poppers, weighted dark green and black streamers, purple and black leeches, and gully worm patterns. “I had a superb experience with great fish on a fly rod,” he writes. He gives the cost of his trip as $495 per day, including tip. That included two fishing sessions per day
