Despite having unbelievably high daily rates for fishing, Turks and Caicos continue to earn good marks, as witness the following report from subscriber Michael Wolff, who fished there three days this past spring with a guide named Hue Evans of Da Reel Deal Fishing Charters. He writes:
“Hue Evans of Da Reel Deal Fishing Charters worked very hard to put me and my party on fish in some very adverse conditions this past spring. The sky was overcast and the wind was blowing constantly at 20 to 30 knots. The weather was so bad it simply blew us off the water around Turks and Caicos. But at that point Hue motored us out to sea for more than an hour to a flat that was at least a mile long and a half-mile wide. It was one of the most beautiful flats I have ever fished. It was, quite literally, the perfect bonefish flat. It didn’t take Hue long to put the four newcomers to bonefishing in my party onto their very first bonefish. He put another first timer onto her first barracuda. He was an excellent guide who I would recommend to anyone. The fishing that day was one of the best fishing experiences I have had in 30 years of fly fishing.
“Fishing in the Turks and Caicos is ridiculously expensive by any measure, but if you are going to be there and you want to fish with a guide who is smart, knows the water, and is funny and personable, Hue Evans is your man. Fellow subscribers who are familiar with the Mangrove Cay Club on Andros Island in the Bahamas may want to know that he guided there for many years before relocating his family to Turks and Caicos to set up his own operation. Hue will pick you up from any hotel in Providenciales and drop you off, which is very nice. He has a flats boat, as well as a 26-foot center-console boat powered by twin 250s.”
Postscript: Wolff gives the cost of a day of fishing with Evans as $800, plus tip. His report indicates that Evans’s Web address is www.dareeldealfishing.com, but that site was not working as this was written. Evans can be reached by e-mail at [email protected].
