Subscriber William Boyle has good things to say about the two days he and his son-in-law spent on the Arkansas River near Salida, Colorado, this past July. They were guided by Dan Stockton and Jera Vinton with an outfitting company called Arkanglers (www.arkanglers.com). The first day was devoted to wade fishing, the second to float fishing.

“This was my son-in-law’s first fly fishing trip,” Boyle writes. “He had numerous hook-ups and ultimately landed a nice rainbow. By day two, he was throwing a nice line.”

Boyle says the Colorado River in this area has abundant brown trout, a moderate number of rainbows, and only a few cutthroat trout. His catch on the trip, however, included two cutts, the largest running 18 inches, plus several browns up to 16 inches. He says the river was low but had adequate flow given the time of year. The only hatches he saw were sporadic mayfly hatches.

He gives the cost of the two days of fishing as $700. He lists as a highlight of the trip the “excellent instruction” Dan provided his son-in-law. He recommends the entire experience to fellow subscribers, noting that Salida has enough good dining spots and shops to keep a non-fishing spouse occupied for a while.
