Most of the booking agents we write about here at The Angling Report are based in the United States, but we do occasionally talk about agents based in Europe and South Africa. Well, here’s a new wrinkle: We just learned about a booking agency based in South America (specifically, in Chile) that focuses on South American clients. It’s called Fly Fishing The Run (www.flyfishingtherun.com), and it’s the brainchild of Cristián Rodríguez, who says 65 to 70 percent of his client base is from Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. Dorado trips are a staple of his company, he says, along with saltwater trips focused on tarpon and permit. Cayo Romano/Cayo Cruz in Cuba has been a particularly big hit with his clients.

We’ve always jumped at the chance to write about agencies based outside the United States because they usually book some destinations new to us and new to most of the subscribers to this publication. Indeed, Fly Fishing The Run does book at least one such destination, Lakutaia Lodge in Puerto Williams, the world’s southernmost city. Rodríguez says the fishing there for sea-run brown and brook trout, plus steelhead, relies on the use of a helicopter, which takes clients out to isolated rivers in the islands around Cape Horn. “Anglers can choose where they want to fish each day,” Rodríguez says. “All of the waters in this area are very little known. There is some excellent steelhead fishing at times, and February and March are prime times for spawning sea-run brown trout and brook trout.” Postscript: Has anyone fished out of Lakutaia Lodge? Please check in with a report if you have. Write: doncausey@ anglingreport.com.
