A lesser-known stream you may want to check out this fall in the northern Rocky Mountain area is Fish Creek in Montana. Fish Creek is located about 30 miles west of Missoula off Interstate 90. The creek has been running higher than normal this summer but should be in prime shape this month. To get there, look for Exit 66 between the towns of Alberton and Superior. From there, head south on County Road 4230, which follows the creek.

Fish Creek is exactly that – a creek, not a river. It is just about an easy cast wide. It produces cutthroat, rainbow and brook trout in the six to 14-inch range. Fly shop personnel and guides who know Fish Creek can be found in Missoula. Check out Grizzly Hackle (*), The Missoulian Angler (*) or Streamside Anglers (*). You can also find plenty of lodging in Missoula. Another possible base of operation is St. Regis, about 30 miles to the west of Fish Creek. You can find fishing gear and advice in that town at the Clark Fork Fly Shop (*). There is a Super 8 Motel (*) in St. Regis. – Bill Cenis.
