Many of us are looking for a chance to combine flats fishing with a trip that our wives would enjoy. I searched the Angling Report files around Cancun and found out about the local guides. I then emailed Boca Paila and asked if they did single day trips, and Ursula emailed back that they did. Based on information from friends, we booked a hotel (Continental Playacar) in Playa del Carmen, about 40 miles south of Cancun through Funjet Vacations (airfare and hotel package) and I booked two days at Boca Paila. This trip turned out better than I had thought. My wife and 17 year old daughter had a ball in the Playa del Carmen area, as did I. Just large enough to have a great choice of restaurants, and close to Mayan ruins, snorkeling, etc., without the Cancun headaches. Boca Paila was a 1 1/2 hour drive in a rental car away. I arrived at 7:30 am on January 20 and immediately proceeded to the dock and my guide (Gregario) and I set off on a cloudy, cool, windy day. Hooked up with 10 bonefish, landing 5. Missed many other due to my poor casting. Not great but not bad for the bad light and windy conditions. Came back two days later on a calmer, clearer day and with my guide Mario landed 13 bonefish and one wonderful permit! Several other chances at permit and many other at bonefish. The price is $375 US per day of guided fishing for one or two in the boat, about the same price as guides in the Cancun area. I would suggest this location as a great way to fish the flats and please your wife, kids, whatever. Boca Paila has new Dolphin flats boats that are great. - Would you recommend this trip to a friend?:
