This was by far one of the best lodges I have ever stayed at. Liz Bain runs a wonderful operation that is entirely focused on providing the best experience possible for fishermen in perhaps the best bonefishing location in the world. The rooms are pleasant and well appointed, with rod racks, outdoor fresh water hoses for rinsing of the gear and a sitting room outside the bedroom. While this was my first visit, it won't be the last and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to catch numerous good-size bones and a real opportunity at double-digit-size fish.
The guides are some of the most knowledgeable I've fished with, their friendly attitude is contagious, they love what they do and have an intimate knowledge of the fishery and the area. Leslie, one of the guides, not only had a great sense of humor, he is the best fly caster I have come across. How many people do you know who can cast an entire fly line without a rod? Or cast the entire fly line with one hand behind the back? He can delicately drop a fly 40 feet away at exactly the right angle, or shoot it 100 feet with either hand in any direction into a 15 mph wind. To say we were impressed is an understatement. More importantly, he always positioned the boat to maximize our far more limited abilities, with the wind at our backs. We more often than not heard "give me a cast at 11 o'clock, 40 feet" and our conversion ratios were very high. The guides at Mangrove Cay are the best I have fished with in the Bahamas, period.
The location of the lodge allows for easy access to the West Side and a great variety of waters in the bights, always providing opportunities for sheltered waters even in rough weather.
The food is some of the best found at any lodge and the chef, Ike, adds an element rarely found in a true fishing lodge. Grilled lobster, grouper on a bed of risotto, perfectly cooked lamb chops were a few of the wonderfully presented dishes we had during our stay. - Would you recommend this trip to a friend?:
